In August 1704 a small Danube village called Blenheim gave its name to a crushing defeat inflicted on the flower of the French army by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. The French and Bavarian armies were defeated by a coalition, led by Marlborough as Captain General. This coalition included not only the British but also Dutch, Danish, a variety of German states and the Duke's partner in this epic battle, the commander of the Imperial Austrian army, Prince Eugene of Savoy. Three hundred years later this battle may not hold the popular place in history that Waterloo does, yet as a lesson in coalition warfare, among many other things, it is at least its equal. This book describes the nature of warfare, the colourful uniforms and the various armies of this period.
